We later find out that the only reason they have this much power is because the principal is using them to enact his prejudices against anime, and they're shown to be a perfectly normal council in the reconstructed world to drive the point home. Downplayed, however, as the other clubs continue associating with the anime club despite being "halted" by the council. They serve as the antagonists for much of the anime. Absurdly Powerful Student Council: The student council holds a lot of power, working a lot of times to shut down the anime club.

Which should also serve as no surprise when the same trio perform the same song and dance live in front of the entire student body and a stadium full of outside guests on episode 8, as another reference to Love Live!, particularly of School Idol Project's and Sunshine's first arc of both series' main trios saving their club from getting shut down by the student council by performing live in front of a huge crowd.
